ARE ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS DESTROYING YOUR THYROID?

Hypothyroidism, a condition in which an under performing thyroid gland fails to produce enough of the important thyroid hormones, seems to be on the rise these days. It is estimated that more that 20% of women and 10% of men in the U.S. have thyroid dysfunctions and most don’t even know it.

The common symptoms of hypothyroidism such as mild weight gain, fatigue, muscle aches, depression and low sex drive can also be attributed to other health problems. This is why some people may have this disease and not know it. Hypothyroidism can occur at any age from infancy to adulthood but women make up the largest group of victims and especially those women over age 50.

If left untreated, an under performing thyroid, over time can result in a number of health problems such as, weight gain (usually in the form of belly fat in adults), infertility, high cholesterol, joint problems and heart disease.

We know that hypothyroidism is a growing problem. The question is why? Many doctors and research scientists point to environmental toxins as one highly likely cause. They believe that the thyroid gland reacts negatively to this contamination and is issuing us a warning about the effects of these toxins in our bodies.

Dr. Marc Hyman, a leader in the emerging field of Functional Medicine states that, “from the research I’ve reviewed and the patients I’ve seen in the last 20 years, it’s clear to me that the thyroid gland is your body’s own yellow canary. It’s sensitive to many different influences – your diet, your lifestyle, and the world around you. And all of these influences can affect how well your thyroid functions.”

Like the miners who carried canaries into the mines to warn of toxic gases, Dr. Hyman thinks that our thyroid gland could be our body’s first warning system. In a world where we eat more and more toxic food, are exposed daily to tens of thousands of untested chemicals, pollution, petrochemicals and heavy metals, is it any wonder that our thyroids are taking a whipping?

Harry MacCormick wrote the Standards and Guidelines for Organic Agriculture in 1984. This resulted in the passage of the Organic Foods Protection Act of 1990. He is considered to be the godfather of the modern organic movement. He says that very minute levels of pesticide intake over and over again over a period of time can trigger all types of health problems. Additionally, chemicals such as chlorides, fluorine, percholate and other chemicals can lead to hypothyroidism.

In his outstanding book The Hundred Year Lie, investigative writer Randall Fitzgerald warns about our over reliance on synthetic chemicals and the health problems that they have caused in modern society. It is a real eye opener and a must read for anyone interested in improving their health.

The Thyroid

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland at the base of the front of the throat. It secretes two main hormones called thyroxin (t-4) and triiodothyromine (t-3) which are responsible for a number of key processes in the body. They regulate the production of proteins, help control body temperature and influence your heart rate. The thyroid also produces calcitonin, a hormone that regulates calcium amounts in your blood.

One of the thyroid’s main functions is to regulate your metabolism by maintaining the rate at which your body burns fats and carbohydrates. If this function is diminished, weight gain can occur. This can lead to a lifelong struggle with weight loss. Not everyone who is overweight suffers from a bad thyroid. But if you suspect that you do, see your doctor. Only a medical test can determine if your thyroid is under active.

Your doctor can also test you for food allergies which can negatively affect your thyroid. Also, nutritional deficiencies like selenium, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, iodine and tyrosine can lead to thyroid problems.

Suggestions for minimizing your exposure to toxic chemicals
While it is impossible to completely eliminate our exposure to toxic chemicals, there are a few things that we can do to keep our bodies and our thyroids as healthy as possible. First, we can make our homes as toxic free as possible by eliminating as many dangerous chemicals as possible.

Did you know that our largest exposure to toxic chemicals is in our homes? We use toxic chemicals to clean our clothes, bodies, teeth, floors, walls and dishes. We rub toxic chemicals on our bodies, underarms and hair. Everyday we voluntarily expose ourselves to thousands of untested and potentially hazardous chemicals. Household cleaners are the worst offenders.

Try substituting with safer alternatives. There are a number of companies that make excellent natural, non-toxic substitutes for many of the products which we have come to love. These natural products are safer and they work. Click here to check out Oprah’s favorite all natural, non-toxic household cleaners.

Be careful what you put in your body also. Whenever possible eat foods that are locally and organically grown. You’ll be doing yourself and the planet a big favor.

Take a natural multivitamin/mineral supplement everyday to prevent nutritional deficiencies. Supplementing with Omega-3 fish oil is a great idea for reducing inflammation in your body. The benefits of Omega-3 fish oil have been well documented and are numerous.

Educate Yourself
One of the best things you can do is to educate yourself about the dangers of chemical toxins. A great place to start is by taking a good look at the website the hundred-year lie by Randall Fitzgerald. This site is packed full of eye opening information about the dangers of modern chemicals and the diseases they may be responsible for.

Want to learn how to live a greener life? I highly recommend Sloan Barnett’s, website and best selling book by the same name, green goes with everything. It's a quick read with tons of easy tips on making your home and body as toxic free as possible.

The old saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” is advice well worth taking. When the thyroid becomes damaged to the point where drugs have to be taken to produce thyroid hormones, this is a life long condition. Minimizing your exposure to toxic chemicals is one form of prevention that is a very smart choice to make.
